A Sunday Review

TV this week:

  • Doctor Who: "In the Forest of the Night" - I knew there would be a tiger in there somewhere. Besides the utterly ridiculous science (which is acceptable in a fantasy show like this, just irritating at times) this was a nice, gentle story with hilarious children. A nice off-story, but I'd hate for there to be many of these in a season.
  • Doctor Who: "Dark Water" - No. No. No. Just... no. I'm so tired of Moffat killing off characters just to bring them back. It's like a freakin' superhero comic. No. Find some conflict other than death or the end of the world. If those are the only way to get enough tension in your story, that's a sign your writing is too weak.
  • Doctor Who: "Death in Heaven" - I guess the only thing wose than killing off a good character only to bring them back is killing off a character for good. I may have disliked the bow tie, but she did NOT deserve that fate. After watching this episode I was uncertain whether or not I would grab a pitchfork and torch and go after Moffat or not. I'm still kind of uncertain. All I know for sure is that some aspects of this story were so clumsily handled that I want to smack the writer and director, while others were done well enough to nearly make me cry. I doubt I'll know whether or not I hate the episode until after the Christmas special. And even then, I may still be unsure.

DCBS
Here are reviews of the DCBS comic books that I've gotten around to reading and reviewing, sorted by the original shipping date:
  • Sep 24th
  • Aquaman and the Others: Futures End #1 - Um. What? Not the finest story, and I'm not sure what to make of that ending. With this being out of continuity, sort of, I'm not sure I care, either.
  • Sinestro: Futures End #1 - As with so many of the Futures End books, I just find myself not caring much about it. The only thing that bothered me in this one was Soranik's fate before Sinestro left her. Ug.
  • Batman Beyond Universe #14 - Sad ending to what turned out to be a sad story. Poor Terry. Poor Bruce. Poor everyone. Ahem. And set up for the next storyline, which is good. But no Justice League, which is bad.
  • Batman '66 #15 - This is an issue to be avoided by arachnophobes! Fun, as usual. I'm getting a hankering for 60's TV now that I'm reading this book.
  • Groo vs Conan #3 - That wasn't the result I was expecting from that fight, but I guess in a battle of mindless versus powerful, him that gots nothing to lose gots the best shot. No, that didn't make any sense. Neither does this book.
  • Star Trek: Harlan Ellison's City on the Edge of Forever #4 - This continues to be an amazing book with significant differences from the aired episode... and yet the basic story is still the same. I'm enjoying it.
  • Future Proof #1 - This is a really strange book. I think we got it because of the time travel aspect. I'm not sure I'm impressed. It needed another edit.
  • Treehouse of Horror #20 - Zombies, zombies, and more zombies. I'm really tired of zombies now. Let's move on to some new horror icon.
  • Steed and Mrs. Peel: Needed #3 - Decent ending to the story, with Steed being his usual self and Peel arriving in time to make for a perfect scene. Not the best Avengers ever, but not too bad.
  • Steampunk BSG 1880 #2 - Still interested in the way this is going. It's a very strange version, but it's got its moments.
  • Grimm Fairy Tales: Warlord of Oz #5 - What the heck did I just read? I wish I could figure out more of what character is what in this. Mostly, I'm just irritated by it.

This series of Doctor Who has left me really cold. Capaldi is great! The stories he's been given have been dire. I'm just saying that Moffat should hand over the role of lead writer very soon. (And please don't take Capaldi with him...)
