It started with this utterly ridiculous review of "Game of Thrones" at the New York Times. The reviewer is definitely not the kind of person who ought to be watching fantasy television based on a fantasy epic. This ignorant comment shows that she hasn't met a lot of women out of her own set:
I can honestly say that I have never met a single woman who has stood up in indignation at her book club and refused to read the latest from Lorrie Moore unless everyone agreed to "The Hobbit" first.Clearly she doesn't know enough actual women. After all, I've never heard of Lorrie Moore, and what little I saw looking up her work after reading the review made me think I'm not interested in her "failing relationships and terminal illness" books.
The response from strong women everywhere echoed what can be seen at io9 with Really, why would men ever want to watch "Game Of Thrones"? Which is a funny view of the series, but not inaccurate. I read the first three books before issues with time and the library made me stop. I plan on rereading and catching up eventually.
Eventually, Martin himself commented on the review and responses. I'm sure this one will ease off quickly, but it's nice to see that female fantasy-lovers are so well-represented on the 'net.

Anybody reads the New York Times?
Apparently enough people to get annoyed. More likely, just one person got annoyed and linked. It only takes one irritated fan to get the entire 'net in an uproar.
I've never read the books. Would you recommend I give the TV series a miss until I do? (I keep hearing how good they are...)
Honestly, I have no idea. I read them some time ago, and haven't reread yet, so I just don't know.
