I've decided to link to some of my favorite stuff at the newspaper I work at and comment a little on the articles. This is not everything I've written, just stuff I want to remember. Also, I can't say too much. I don't want to get into trouble.
- Local woman celebrates 100 years - 30 Jan 2012 - Another fun event to attend. I loved chatting with her boyfriend.
- Sunnyside students crafting a robot for regional competition - 21 Feb 2012 - Always fun to hang out with a bunch of teenagers building a robot!
- Rehabilitation director looking forward to using new gym and equipment - 28 Feb 2012 - After doing this interview, I wanted to "play" on the rehabilitation equipment as well.
- Wicked witch encourages Rotarians to attend play - 29 Feb 2012 - I love the headline, and the story isn't too bad. Rotary is always good for a story or two.
- Sunnyside City Council finds its man in former Selah administrator - 6 Mar 2012 - The events described in this article ended up causing the city a lot of pain. We just didn't know how much at the time.
- Important exam for sophomores this week at Sunnyside High School - 12 Mar 2012 - I always like seeing high school students supporting their fellow students. And those posters were kind of cool.
- Chocolate maker gives sweet samples to Nouvella Club members - 16 Mar 2012 - I really love samples. I mean, really. Especially of chocolate. I get offered wine samples all the time and turn 'em down, but the chocolate I cannot resist.
- Sunnyside elementary school pathologist's Master's thesis sheds new light on ways to treat facial nerve damage - 16 Mar 2012 - This lady was another fantastic interview. I really enjoyed talking with her, and understood some portions of the thesis (but not all of it).
- Port commissioners open to idea of exploring renewable natural gas as a potential new industry - 20 Mar 2012 - Renewable natural gas has so much potential... we already have the cows for dairy, capturing the gas reduces smell, and the infrastructure for using the gas is already in place. This should be a no brainer.
- Sunnyside mechanic still keeping cars rolling - 21 Mar 2012 - Another great interview with another great person. One thing being a community reporter teaches you is that there are a lot of neat folks out there.
- Bedlam breaks out at council meeting - 27 Mar 2012 - This was my first meeting covering my new beat: city council. I had subbed for Jennie a couple of times, but now the beat was mine. And this happened. I remember walking into work the next morning and just standing there staring at the editor until he had to ask. Then I described the meeting, in much more vivid terms than I could use in the article. It was appalling. Bob said to write it cleanly and fairly, so I did my best. I didn't write the headline, but the meeting has been referred to as "the bedlam meeting" ever since.
