Ripples Through Time - 039

I'm reading every Aquaman solo adventure in publication order, one per day. After I read each story I'm going to post the cover/splash page and a few thoughts on the story.

Adventure #105 Aquaman Splash Page
Adventure #105 (June 1946) - The Impossible Voyage!

Gordon attempts to cross the Atlantic in his sailboat, The Rainbow, and Aquaman gets involved near the end of the voyage and learns that everything is not as it seems.

The beginning starts with Badger and Gordon having a fight, and wagering a hundred pounds that Gordon cannot sail his boat single-handed to the States. The fight and wager are apparently well-publicized, because even Aquaman knows about it when he sees the ship a week out from its destination. Of course, this is where some of the oddness comes in. Why did Badger wait until Gordon was only a week away from the US to try to take him out? And how on earth could Badger have caught up in his tiny launch? Did he fly to the US then attack from land? But if Gordon was still a week from land... oh, my head hurts.

The smuggling angle wasn't too bad, but it left the story with no one to root for but Aquaman. Sure, Aquaman is a hero and all, but it's nice when he helps good people instead of just beating up thugs and smugglers.

Finny Friends Report: Aquaman has starfish and octopuses fight to distract Gordon while he removes the jewels. He replaces them with electric eels that shock Gordon, Badger, and nameless thug when Aquaman reveals he knows all.

Captured/Knocked Out report: Once again, Aquaman is never captured or knocked out in this story. It seems to have become much less common.

Quotefile: Gordon, "I shall set out to win your bally money this moment!"

Have you read this story? What do you think?
