Since we returned from over the mountains on Sunday, we've had no hot water in the house. I'm beginning to get a little... ripe... because I'm unwilling to take a freezing cold shower for fear it will trigger a fibro attack. Everyone please feel sorry for Eric now.

You are on the Frontier. Get a small wash tub and a big tea kettle and you are set.
Actually, I did a sponge bath with my kettle last night. Better than nothing, but still annoying.
Was it an element in the water heater?
Eric says it was the "thermal coupler". In older hot water heater models, it could be removed and replaced for $14 plus labor. In our newer model, a large section had to be replaced, and the parts ordered directly from the manufacturer (imagine that!). So it cost nearly $200. Grrr.
