Relay for Life

I'd like to write a big ol' update on what's going on in my life, but I've been a little distracted. Worse, I threw out my back Thursday somehow, and I'm in agony. The painkiller and muscle relaxant the doctor prescribed is making only a slight dent in the pain.

Then.

This morning I got news that a friend of mine I met at Anglicon last year has lost his fight with cancer. Justin Manning, the guy in the blue shirt at the center of the photo below, passed away this morning after a long battle.

I was dithering on whether or not to do the Relay for Life this year, but Justin has prompted me to do it again, in his honor. If you would like to donate, visit my relay page. But even if you cannot donate, please spend a couple of minutes after you read this thinking of those we've lost to cancer.

Thanks.

Morning Thoughts

I haven't been writing consistently. I have no excuse to offer. I just haven't done it.

Maybe because my life is boring... I mean, the first thing that comes to my mind to write about is "deflategate" or "ballghazi" or (my personal favorite) "the squishy ball scandal". My first response on hearing it was to shake my head and say it wasn't possible. The refs handle the football almost every down, which means the difference had to be subtle enough they didn't notice it. That made me think there wasn't much to the scandal. But then someone did an analysis of fumbles by the Patriots, and suddenly I doubt my own doubts. If the Patriots have been cheating, they've been getting away with it for years.

I've been training Inkwell to sit when I am preparing his food for him. He does it maybe one out of every five times now. This morning he sat patiently while I got his food ready. That was pretty neat.

Starting my third week of calorie counting. My Monday morning weigh-in says I've lost one pound since last week. My first week I lost three pounds, which was probably mostly water. I started up exercising again this week... let's see how long I can keep it up.

After the last Seahawks win, I've had a particular song going through my head a lot... "It's not how you start, it's how you finish."

This Huffington Post article about addiction makes perfect sense to me. I'm addicted to a lot of things that are not "addictive" in the chemical sense. Which is why I dare not try alcohol, even if I wanted to. In short, addiction is caused by dissatisfaction, not by just by chemicals.

I'm doing Relay for Life again. If you want to donate, visit my profile page and contribute.

Lastly, here's Inkwell learning about catgrass:

Relay for Life

Walking around a track multiple times between 2 and 4 a.m. is a little odd, to be honest. It was colder than I expected and I had to go to my car to get a coat. But overall, it was pleasant. The worst part of the entire experience was the music, which was set up to be WAY too loud. It physically hurt my ears whenever I walked around the part of the track nearest to the speakers. I kind of wanted to tell the guy to drop it down a few decibels, but that would have meant stopping and talking with him, and I didn't feel like doing it.

My body managed the walk surprisingly well. I didn't collapse, didn't hurt while I was walking, didn't scream. Afterwards I felt very sore, but not impossibly so. Eric and I both walked for most of the 2 hours, both taking breaks every once in awhile. It was an interesting experiment.

If we do it again, I think I want a time slot a little closer to dawn so I can at least see more of the leading edge of sunlight creeping across the sky. It was cool to see the stars, but the lights on the field kept it from being awesome.

All told our team raised a bit over $4,100. You can still donate for a bit longer if you want. I will say that not every team managed to have someone walking the track for the entire 24 hours, but according to our team captains, we accomplished the feat. So if you want to reward that sort of effort, feel free to donate.

Will we do it next year? The team has not made a decision. We pulled the whole thing together pretty fast this year, but we aren't sure what we'd do with an entire year to fundraise. We are definitely thinking about it, though. I wasn't the only person who had an interesting time participating.
