How to make really simple garden lights for a single use (like a party) out of LEDs, coin batteries, and mason jars.

For stupid customers: the lollipop policy.

An idea for electric cars: stations quickly replace the batteries instead of recharging them.

Duh, not handholds. From the comments: "As a commercial pilot I can assure you that those instruments are clearly labeled. That one MAY have had the markings, Warning hot, and No Handhold, and No Step. Probably at least two of those markings, possibly all three." TSA inspectors should NOT be illiterate. And it's a good thing the airline re-inspected the planes, or that TSA flunkie could've murdered hundreds of people. In the name of "security". I think the TSA should be grounded and replaced with something useful and intelligent.

Tardy Linkdump

The 100 Most Powerful People in British Culture.

More from Mike Manley on babymen. While I don't agree entirely with everything he says about fandom, I agree with most of it.

Polite Scott has a cool article that links to a very cool short story. Thanks Scott!

Making Light reports on a book cover that would just annoy me.

Teen creates Chemistry Card Game: I want. Can you add your own cards, I wonder? Expansion packs would be cool.

As of July 1st, Washington state is going to have a tax like this, and it's insane. Especially since the state's tax affects small businesses that really can't afford to figure out the tax for every single municipality in the state. Sales taxes are regressive, anyway. I think they aren't the best way to get money for government.

The Bad Astronomer makes a webcomic about Creationist "logic".

Invasive species are BAD.

LOLcats are developing their own theology. I like it a little better than FSM in some ways. Happycat is happy. Ceiling cat is a pervert.

I think this article is mostly bull. If I've proved anything, it's that it is possible for an obese person to change habits enough to become... er, not obese. As I lost weight, my hunger and cravings also changed, which this article implies is impossible because such things are genetically determined. While that's no doubt true of some small percentage of people, I think most people can lose weight if they can find that switch in the brain that allows them to commit to lifestyle changes.

Huge Linkdump with Chocolate Milkshakes and Giant LEGOs

Comic Book Idol is returning. I really enjoyed the last round they did, so I'm looking forward to seeing this one. The winner gets a trip to New York, but the real winners are the fans who get to see a lot of great artwork throughout the contest.

New Comic Book Day Bingo.

Mike Sterling reports on the robbery at his store.

Pal Dorian (and quite a few others actually) reports on a server attack on GayGamer.net. Dorian writes about the problem much more eloquently than I could, so go read.

Garrett alerts us to an interesting story involving works licensed under the Creative Commons. Apparently an ad agency in Australia is using CC licensed work without notifying the photographers or the subjects of the photo.

Here's an interesting interview with Mike Rowe, host of Dirty Jobs on Discovery Channel. Well, I found it interesting. We don't usually look at the infrastructure of our society. Perhaps we ought to be paying more attention. This is one show that isn't afraid to look deep.

Sunny Monday Links

Best wishes go out to Polite Scott who is in hospital after a heart attack. Get well soon, Scott!

Oh, I'm SO glad I didn't go downtown Friday afternoon. I'd rather meet Bully than Blake any day (sorry Blake, Bully is cuter).

Linda Medley asks us to Help Greensburg Kansas by remembering it as it was before the tornado.

There has been a reaction to Doctor Who being pre-empted by a stupid song contest.

Speaking of, Doctor Who has a Prologue.

Interview with Hiro. Ah, a fellow nerd.

E-mail scammers getting desperate?

Candle update: I did indeed take a nice hot bath, and burned a "Green Apple" candle. I burned the tealight for a little over an hour, and after I blew it out and let it cool, it looked like I'd burned it for only a couple of minutes. On the negative side, the room only smelled faintly of apples, but then I had the fan going, which no doubt dispersed some of it. On an unrelated note, I found another activity that is much improved by having lost so much weight. On Sunday I burned the other tealight in the small bathroom until it burnt out... five hours later! The room smelled of citrus the rest of the evening.
